Program Summary

The Native Film Workshop Grant support workshops for native high school students in collaboration with Colorado’s Ute Mountain Ute and Southern Ute Tribes living both on or off the reservation. These workshops help motivate and inspire students who are struggling to find a passion in high school.

In 2018, this grant funded a two-week intensive summer workshop in partnership with the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe Reservation in Towaoc, Colorado. The Colorado Film School conducted the workshop.

During its first year, six high school students created a nine-minute documentary exploring the Ute Mountain Ute Tribal Park. The film premiered at Denver International Film Festival and was invited to screen at Durango International and Breckenridge Film Festivals. After the film premiered in Denver, the students were awarded the Denver Academy’s Special Jury Prize.

In 2019, through a second workshop in Towaoc, students created a short documentary on the topic of unity about tribal traditions, culture, and conversations with elders.
